Hi Nige

There is no simple step-by-step for this. I cobbled together from all over the place.

Use the latest Debian Bone Wheezy from the Beaglebone Community pages.

Use the I2S driver and installation process from here: http://bbb.ieero.com

Fanny about until you either a) want to kill everyone who has ever seemed to be associated with this project or b) make sound come out!

It isn't actually that tortuous, but it is all very beta.

The RPi just worked. I have had issues with getting anything attached to the BBB to respond - USB drive, Wifi dongle, powered hub, HDMI monitor. All problematic one way or another.

Have a calming beer on hand and put sharp or heavy objects out of reach before starting

but when i put in this command it says ive no permission

echo BB-BONE-BOTIC1 > /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.*/slots

another thing that crossed my mind was that im using the pcm5102 dac chip not the ess 90**, wonder would that need to be listed/changed in the driver?

Are you logged in as Root? Not sure if you need to be, but I generally do and haven't seen a permissions issue.

I don't see how the actual dac type can make a difference. The streaming device only knows to issue the I2S on the nominated pins, the dac is either I2S compliant or not. As long as it has its own master clock, you should be good to go. There is no handshake between dac and streamer.

Yeah, I am crap support - know nothing, not around a lot!

I would log in as Root, otherwise you end up typing "sudo" a lot! (Which is maybe why I am no one's sys admin!)

My BBB will mostly play 44/1k and 48k files without issue, but occasionally there is a loss of lock on the Buffalo leading to minor dropouts. If I try hi res files though it happens frequently. The view seems to be that the BBB isn't producing a stable bit clock, at least not within the tight limits set by the Buffalo DPLL.

For listening purposes I shall be returning to the Pi until there is a solution to the dropout issue, but at least the BBB is shown to work and it does actually sound very good.
