Kirill Petrenko for Berlin

Post by DonKC »

Kirill Petrenko for Berlin. Interesting choice and most likely a compromise between the Thielemann and Nelsons camps. Not really widely known, but very well respected and a serious musician, not a showman or political figure.

Going to be interesting to watch!

Yesterday on Facebook I saw a post from Norman Lebrecht and wondered if Petrenko's appointment was confirmed, on the face of it it is probably a good appointment.

I often take Norman with a few (billion) grains of salt, but his source was right. Norman also insinuates he was offered the post in the first round but declined.

Not yet ready to have an opinion on Petrenko, but thank God it was not Dudamel.

Kirill Petrenko does not seem to frequent the recording studio very much. The only recordings that I can seem to come up with are the following....

So I am assuming that will change pretty quickly and the whole repertoire will now be recorded with him....how quickly a new Beethoven and/or Mahler cycle to be issued???

Yes, Lebrecht calls him a recording virgin. The only one I have ever heard is the Suk Asrael Symphony. It was a fine recording, but not being all that familiar with the work, I could not pass judgment. A friend with a Berlin Philharmonic Digital Concert Hall subscription says there is a spectacular Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms and Scriabin Poème de l'extase on that service.

I have just found this recording of Petrenko conducting the Bayerisches Staatsorchester in a performance of Scriabin's Symphony No. 3....
