I find it lacking in joy, somehow. Can't quite put my finger on what's "wrong", but it feels a bit staid, which isn't what I was expecting.

The sixth has always been my favourite so I have been listening to it for years and I find that quite a lot of conductors do not quite get it right in my opinion. I think that it is a work that requires major subtleties of touch, thought and interpretation from conductor and orchestra.

I am partial to a bit of Philip Glass' music now and again but this was a disaster....

Caldara: Christmas Cantata....
....a lovely recording and comes recommended.
Kevin Mallon has an Irish connection; he was born in the USA but went to live in Belfast from an early age. He studied with John Elliot Gardiner and has been involved with La Capelle Royale, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Le Concert Spirituel, Les Arts Florissants and Tafelmusik so he has a very fine pedigree.
