see the caps on the left of the choke its the one nearest the ram sticks
you will see a plus sign

Image

on the underside i connected the supercap
you wont have room to put underneath so probably replace the existing cap on topside

use continuity on the multimeter to determine which is + and -
- is marked with a stripe on the caps

Great stuff Nige, that all makes sense.
I have some clearance under the Mobo so I could lift the Mobo and solder to the underside solder points and sleeve those long legs on the Cap so that it extends out and sits just outside the ATX connector.
Looking forward to trying this.
Cheers, Pearse.

was able to lower ram voltage down another 0.05v :)
for even more improved clarity now running 1.3v

I bet you are hearing a great difference.

Why 1.8 ever?

Pearse, the excellent book I'm reading "Practical Electronics for Inventors" says to keep component leads short due to stray capacitance. Then it goes on to say this a bigger problem with sensitive and high impedance circuits.

Thanks Dan, I will make sure to put some serious sleeve insulation on the legs.
If they really work well then maybe I might go as far as desoldering the existing Cap and mount on the topside of the Mobo as I should have clearance in the Streacom case at 45mm long.

Cheers, Pearse.

No luck here with this Maxwell cap - board wont power up.
Tripled checked polarity, + to +, - to -
MB voltages elsewhere are good, but voltage across cap only showing 0.5v, so I guess MB reg wont supply RAM AND charge the flat cap.
Disconnect cap and MB boots up fine.
Guess I will have to wait for the LM338 supply to arrive turtle post and use that to pre-charge cap for 5minutes. before turning PC on.
