Battery Power Supply

Post by sima66 »

I like to incorporate the 3.3v battery PS in my new PC box.
So far I will need 3x 3.3v lines, but with the possibility to expand in the future.

At the moment I have one toroid transformer(6V @ 4.16A), 3 regulators, 3 switches, 8 LiFePo batteries and a lot of time! :)

How would be the best way to connect them for the cleanest power?

only need one regulator set at 3.3
so split power from reg 3 ways though a switch to the three or more cells and a switch on power out

I tried to draw the blueprint and I think that I will post later in the "jokes" tread!
The latest research say that coloring and drawing is healty for you.
Can Nigel be a nice and healthy guy and connect the dots for me? :)

I have my PC power setup with double pole relays. I have a linear 12V supply for the PC, and that supply also turns on the relays.

One pole of the relay is connected to the battery, and one pole to the 3.3 V power supply. When the relays turn on, they connect both the battery and the power supply to the PC. I'd draw a picture but I'm having trouble posting pics right now.

When they turn off, the battery is disconnected from everything. If you leave the 3.3V power supply on all the time, you can leave it connected to the battery all the time too, and this would simply the connections.

Just your computer ;)

One reason I've started using walwarts where I can (other than its easy) is that you don't have to wire with 120V (or 240 in Europe), so less concern with burning things up (or down as the case may be).

I may even compare AC walwart power to a little transformer and see if I can tell the difference. But then again, if it works ok maybe not :)

But back on track, your diagram has a problem

The switch needs to be between the battery and the load, or your battery won't last very long. You don't have to switch both the negative and positive of the battery, but you can. You have to switch at least one side, of each battery, between the battery and load.

BTW, when you wire this up, I would not connect the battery unit the last. I didn't do this in my last project, and found my batteries can make a nice spark. I was lucky the spark was at the switch, so nothing fried (or burned down)

Would this option A:

or option B, be better?

lol there technically the same
only Adam can do it :)
good news is your house will be intact if you did either

not to worry after a bit of practice it will become easier or come more naturally

another switch between + at the batteries and the output would give total isolation
but it probably wont matter

Thanks Nigel, but you should see my "unpublished work"!
The "blueprints" that I posted are the masterpieces! :)

Did you meant adding another switch like this:
