What's a good PCIe soundcard ?

Post by james »

I have a new computer and my old M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard won't work any more because it needs a PCI slot. What would be a good replacement that works with PCIe. I just want stereo (no interest in surround sound). I am running a dual boot system with Win-7 and Centos. I would like it to work with both operating systems.

Thanks
James

Hi Nigel,

Many thanks for your reply.

I had a look at it. I can only find details of the STX-II on-line but I note that the SXT-II needs to connect to the power-supply in the computer. I am not sure if I have a spare/suitable connection ..

My computer power supply has various cables going to the motherboard and then two cables for the disk drives (SATA) and the CD drives (SATA). It does not have any cables for the old IDE drives. The only cable from the power supply not being used has a 6 terminal connector (3x2) and I don't know what this is for or what voltages it supports. It's black. Could I use this with the sound card ? .

As a sound card it looks even better than the one I have at the moment.

Best wishes
James

PS I can send you details of my particular computer model if you need them .. its a Dell.

Hi Nigel,

I found this online and it looks like what I have

I understand there are different types of power supply and mine is a very recent one. I just bought the PC from Dell two weeks ago ..

Its this one ..

http://www.zdnet.com/product/dell-preci ... 00-series/

Its probably madly over specified but I want to keep it for 10-years (my previous PC is 8 years old). I went for the workstation because It has one PCI slot ..

In my old PC I have two PCI cards ..
M-Audio soundcard
Teratec Satellite card

I can only transfer one of these to the new machine. My son likes to watch videos on the computer and he is very unimpressed with the sound quality of the new machine. I only want stereo ..

I definitely don't have that sort of connector (I think its the same as the old pre SATA hard-drive power-cable). I have the 3x2 connector
which I think is designed to attach to a PCIe videocard. I will see if I can get an adaptor that would convert the 3x2 to the right connector.
I will also try to contact Dell to se if they can advise me ...
