CD player/transport recommendations

Post by RickyB75 »

Hi folks,

Having sold my NAP 100, I have some funds to purchase either a CD Player, or a CD Transport and DAC.
Could be either new, or SH.
Budget is circa €1000.

Does anybody have any experience with players/transports in this price range?

Current thinking is either Cyrus CDi, or Audiolab 6000 CDT and second hand DAC. Happy to hear suggestions. Demo is not realistic as I live in Cork, and there isn't an abundance of HiFi dealers down here.

Thanks in advance,

Ricky

There is a Cambridge cxc transport for sale on Adverts. I have read good reviews about it.

Hi Ricky
I rarely listen to cds but as I have a fair number I decided to buy one.
Went for the Audiolab 6000 CDT.
This has rave reviews and is without a doubt a bargain at the price and can't fault anything about it.
Reviews are reviews but everyone I read believed it is as good as cdts costing 1000 plus.
Cost only 350 euro couldn't believe it.
Cheers

Is the mechanism quiet? Now that most of my listening is streaming, I find it harder to block out the noise of a CD physically spinning.

I never listen to CDs any more, but I really should.

Thanks Alan, yes the reviews are favourable.

Would also be interested to know if the mechanism is quiet in use?

I always enjoyed the Cyrus CD players I had a good few years back CD8X and then the CD8SE with smiley face. They had a flaky reputation with their slot loader initially but I never had a problem. I had a psx-r with mine but that makes it a very expensive transport. Are you not better off moving to a dac? :) Plenty of nice ones out there in the 1-2kish range. Holosprings for example or myriad of secondhand choices.

I have one (The Audiolab) and I find it quite good. (But hardly ever use it). It''s slot loading (which I do not like) but so far I have not damaged any CD's. I am using a Resolution Audio CD player as a DAC because the Resolution Audio mechanism is wearing out..
If you want to buy the Audiolab consider Richer Sounds in Belfast. They seem to be able to supply stuff without extra duties as compared with buying from England. (I recently bought a £300 Blu-Ray player and it was the same price (before checkout) on Amazon and RicherSounds.ie but Amazon added some sort of import duty of £30 (when I gave my address as Ireland) so I went with RicherSounds. (Ring them to check).
