DIY full range single driver speaker

Post by hudo »

Planning to start working on DIY speaker project this summer and collecting some ideas and making plans:
- single driver, full range, so i don't have to mess with the crossover. And single driver speakers always had something special whenever i heard them
- to get full range i obviously need to go transmission line or voigt pipe design
- but open baffle (2 way) is also not out of question!
- will be driver by the Primaluna hybrid amp (SS in output, 100W@8ohm), so nothing too sensitive, ideally, 83-88db
- not too complicated construction, since its my first project
- have sub in case it doesn't go very low
- idea is to tune it to my room and all the standing waves i have, doesn't (and will not) have to be do-it-all speaker that can fit most rooms

Any ideas or projects that would fit my requirements?
Also please share any advice or experience you might have on this topic.

So far i found this one https://www.ejjordan.co.uk/PDFs/Eikona_2_VTL.pdf

cheers,

Hi,

I used Li Audio 15in full-range drivers in a solid cedar open baffle. No experience with other full-range drivers but these sound great to me. Sold my fab Audio Note Speakers!
Log thread her on the drivers and open baffle:

Mind you I used straight edges on mine as I was not keen on the aesthetics of the barrel shape.. mine is a good bit smaller as well. Check out HIfi Cave on youtube.

I was thinking of making Le Petit by Jean Hiraga with a fostex driver. These are supposed to sound great and seem straight forward enough.

A few years ago I made a project with a Fostex FE103:
https://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/down ... lo-103.pdf
I just needed a pair of small and cheap speakers for a receiver, so didn't have great expectations. Although missing something in the low range you can perceive some magic in the midrange; and I think one day I will try to add a sub.
The project suggests an equalizing network, but I left the option to bypass it and in the end I personally prefer them without.

Hi, they look great ... like the Kith Haring wrap.
I have a bigger cab design drawn up to provide a bit of bass... full range so no crossover... not sure my carpentry skills are good enough, but will give them a go. over the summer.

When you see inside the cabinet of many commercial speakers, first thing that comes to mind is "I can do that too!" Even if you are not a professional carpenter like me. Finishing the project can be a different story though. Good luck with your project.

Interesting project, have to go through all 32 pages of that thread:)
How far into the room the have to be? I can go 1-1.3m in my room. And how much are these drivers sensitive, do you know of any measurements? I am afraid my amp will have too much gain.

Hi,
I had my baffles about a meter from the wall in a fairly small sitting room. Sounded good in most positions tho. My baffle is not that big so fairly low profile and flexible to move around. A very open sound in the baffles but was curious about other configurations so picked up a set of Tannoy Berkely cabs and they fitted perfectly... sound nice. I will put them in the open baffles again but enjoying this setup for the last six months or so.
They are not the most mid rage speakers but I like them a lot... more than welcome to listen if ever in the North West.

Do you still have the Sound Arts speakers I sold you?

Whats the size on those open baffle speakers, and drivers size?

Still have SoundArtists, sorry didn't know i bought that from you:) Love them, they are on my desktop setup. Currently using small cheap class-d Aiyima T9 amp because it can fit on the desk, but heard those LS3/5 would even sing better with standard class AB amp. Just to find something that can fit the work desk...

Half sorry I did not keep those Sound Artist.

My baffles are 53w by 70h cm and 50mm deep... they were dictated by the solid wood I could get. Bigger wooden baffle would gives more bass but I have a sub running with them.

Another option for OB if you could get decent drivers and look fairly simple:

lots of possibilities
