Totally agree, Claus, I think that's already happened really. There can't be many people in the market for new one-box players or CD transports, even among audiophiles. If I was starting from scratch, I wouldn't start there!Claus wrote:I can see the CDP loosing ground to streaming very fast. Especially when hi-res streaming becomes widely available....

It doesn't seem to have stemmed the flow of really expensive cd players though?Diapason wrote:Totally agree, Claus, I think that's already happened really. I get the impression that the smart money is on people in the meantime wanting to stick with a physical product (and by people I mean in the narrowest sense of people who would spend over €1000 on a hifi separate in the first place) but prepare for the inevitable by offering access to the onboard DAC via USB connectivity and/or spdif etc.

Re: Are Wadia no longer doing CDP
The last time I discussed this (viz. continued use of physical media) with dCS they told me that it varies by market: in some markets they can't shift transports, but there is great demand for DACs, in others transports and players were still strong. That was about two years ago, so things will have changed since then. That said, they did introduce a new flagship transport in the new Vivaldi series this year, so there is still demand for super-expensive transports somewhere!
If I were thinking of upgrading I would probably be thinking in terms of the Vivaldi DAC fed bits from a PC by its USB input. But I'm not: I'm very happy with what I'm hearing so I couldn't be bothered with all the trouble not to mention the huge expense!
dCS were computer-audio-aware very early: they had instructions for using high quality sound cards with their DACs as long ago as 2000 if I recall correctly.
