I would normally have carried out my research on the seller, checked them out via other sites etc etc.

I've bought one or two items for 2K on ebay, but only after I have conversed with the seller, got good answers to various technical questions and checked out their websites etc.

However for 5 figure sums.... I would probably head over on a plane to go visit in person, just to be sure. I would rather lose 500 quid on paying a visit than running the risk of spending 10K on the goods not turning up.

I've rarely had a bad experience, paypal always got my money back, but I did speak to an antique dealer recently, who collected coins. What turned up was batteries. So he reported it to the Gardai in Blackrock... turns out the Sargent on duty knew all about it as somebody else also got deceived that same week.

The eBay seller was livid... as he lost out... so investigations started and it turned out to be somebody in the courier company who was opening packages, helping themselves etc.

Probably small, high value items are most at risk.... I would doubt buying a pair of Tannoy Westminster Royals would go missing!!

Aye, that add for the Amati's did seem to be a little too much like some of those Craigslist adds located on Scotland (for whatever reason!) a little while back promising a whole lot for a whole lot less...

Yeah well spotted... they have been withdrawn. Wonder why... perhaps they will pop up again later? Interesting to see if it does. I thought they could have had more photos. To pull in nearly 13K you really have to work for it.

On another link... I found something really nice... not on eBay though...from a site called HiFi guy..

Wavac MD805's for 7.5K stg...
