Always welcome, a new release of Havergal Brian's admitted quirky and clunky but always fascinating Symphonies:
Symphonies # 22, 23 and 24. English Suite #1
Russia State SO, Alexander Walker
Naxos

Interesting Don; Brian's name has come up on my radar a number of times over the last year or so. That said I know nothing of the composer or the music so I must investigate at some stage; recommendations as to where to start?

Double Monteverdi....
....not suitable listening either for Seán I would imagine but he was a genius and way ahead of his time.

The above disc Naxos 8.572833 is a fine disc and a good intro but this one has a bit of early middle and late Brian.
Dutton 7267
Even I have trouble tackling the huge "Gothic" # 2 which is about 2 hours or so long. Thus, people either enjoy Brian or they don't, not much in between!

Thank you for that Don.

and back to Schubert:
Franz Schubert
Symphony No. 5 & 8
Wiener Philharmoniker
Georg Solti - conducting.
I love the Solti/VPO performance of the Fifth, I find the Eighth less satisfying whereas this is a truly magnificent performance of the "Unfinished":
Franz Schubert
Symphony No. 8
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Karl Böhm - conducting.

The Raphael Kubelik 10 CD set arrived from the UK today. Was less expensive to order from UK and postage than from Amazon US or Archiv.
Bruch Violin Concerto # 1 in g Ida Haendel/Kubelik/Philharmonia 1948
Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphoses
Schoenberg Five Orchestral Pieces
Both above from the legendary Mercury recordings with the Chicago SO 1953 in very good sound.

More Kubelik from this set:
Mahler Symphony # 5 Concertgebouw 1951
Martinu Symphony # 4 and Concerto for Piano, Strings and Timpani Czech Philharmonic 1948/1950
Good period sound, fine pressings and over all quite enjoyable. Recommended.

The Membran sets are superb and I love Kubelik's work so I must get a copy of that set.

So far I have enjoyed each disc, the early Mahler is interesting to compare to his Bavarian Radio set. There is a 1954 Vienna Philharmonic M 1 too.
