So Niall in Cloneys told me where ye'd all gone. (I'm late as usual)
Went to super gig in Whelans 2 weeks ago - the Unthanks from Newcastle
Spacey playing, spine-tingling harmony singing Mixture of trad folk, self written folky, Sexy Sadie (see it on Youtube), 8 on Whelans tiny stage. Stunning (latest CD "Heres the Tender coming")

And Support Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell (also from Newky) have been through the whole tour too and are damn good!

Welcome back Raymo.... and thanks to Niall for giving you the info.

I was thinking of going to the Unthanks gig alright but let it slide (I'm sorry now!). I have the latest CD "Here's the Tender coming" and while I like it I can't get very excited about it. I have to admit I have a deep suspicion of "English Folk"... much of the Hey Nanny No I grew up hearing was the musical equivilent of Morris Dancing and that's not a good thing. It mostly involved singing songs about an England that never actually existed (narratives robbed from Scottish and Irish songs).
In more recent years my path to this new wave of English folk was eased by the likes of Kate Rusby and Eliza Carthy. The Unthanks are somewhat more traditional and clearly less commercial. The CD is a bit of a grower alright and it's worth a listen for the production alone. Next time theyr'e playing we'll hook up ok!
