Why not start a thread for upcoming gigs that deserve a mention. Like this one.....

Date:Saturday 1st December 2012 Time:19.30 Venue:The Sugarclub, Dublin Admission:22.50
Shuggie Otis truly had the vision thing. Compared at the wispy age of 15 with Hendrix and the great Kings of blues guitar (B.B., Albert, Freddie), the young phenom went on to make two expansive, genre-defying, deeply curious albums, 1971’s “Freedom Flight” and 1974’s “Inspiration Information.” The records, essentially crafted as a one- man band, floored Sly Stone, gave the Brothers Johnson their most enduring hit (“Strawberry Letter 23″) and predated the stylistic synthesist Prince by half a decade.

Otis, son of the rhythm and blues bandleader Johnny Otis, was a guitar prodigy, but he didn’t stop there. An exceptional drummer and vibraphone player, he immersed himself in drum-machine technology in its earliest incarnation. He played piano and organ, and he arranged for horns and strings; friends say he was at least as good a bass player as he was a guitarist.

Pugwash in Whelans Dublin, tomorrow night (Wed December 19th) - who will be joined by none other than Ken Stringfellow (Posies, Big Star, REM etc.) The band's frontman and chief songwriter, Thomas Walsh is, of course one half of Duckworth Lewis Method - his other half, Neil Hannon usually puts in an appearance at their shows!

Incidentally, the Pugs have to be the most audiophile-minded of Irish bands. Their Eleven Modern Antiquities album was mastered by the great Steve Hoffman (at great expense, I'm told) while their current album, The Olympus Sound was mastered for vinyl at Abbey Road.
They've a very limited edition 10-inch EP out now (featuring Crowded House's Nick Seymour) which I'm hoping to score at the gig!

I saw Lucinda Williams supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter back in the glory days of Midnight at the Olympia. Lucinda Willaims and her band were great, but the highlight was when Mary Chapin Carpenter opened her set acoustically with a song about a blind orphan being run over by the last train from New Orleans, or whatever. After she finished there was polite applause and silence until someone shouted "That's not Karen Carpenter!"
