Hello

I'm new on here but have searched through the threads and cannot find any recommendations for turntable repair or servicing in Dublin. I have a Dual 1224 that was sold to me as working but won't turn on [can't return it as its from Germany and paid by transfer]. Any advice would be appreciated. I can't investigate it myself as I don't have the nous, tools or space to work on it.

I think Cloney in Blackrock would be the first port of call. http://www.cloneyaudio.com/

Cheers, I rang them up though and they said they wouldn't deal with it.

isn't it great the way they can turn away business? Anyhow, try http://www.thehifihospital.com/index-6.html - I can't actually vouch for them but I'm told they're pretty good.

It is a 40 year old deck after all so I imagine the cost of servicing it (plus the possible unobtanium parts) would make it a headache for any service engineer. My point being, I don`t think it`s fair to make Cloney out as not being bothered. Most people who buy vintage idler drive decks plan to refurbish them and have done their research before buying. That said, it was supposed to be working so I would demand my money back from the seller in Germany. Good deck by all accounts and quite rare so worst case re-sell it as is and try make your money back.

fair enough, it was the wording the OP gave in Cloney's response tat gave me that impression. Probably a bit harsh alright. I take it all back!

Bod - I have to agree with you here. The other thing is cost of a service. Any fella is probably going to spend an hour or 2 on it - hard to see a bill <€100.

For anyone else - be aware if you're thinking of buying a deck on eBay or elsewhere that parts are often an issue. This is especially so for direct drive decks. The controller chips used virtually all of these are proprietary and simply are not available.

Hurts I know but there you are.

Not at all Ivor. I`m not trying to be a censor due to my obvious bias towards the folks in Cloney`s. I just know from experience that when taking in old items for repair it was usually cost prohibitive or impossible to fix. Cloney stopped doing this years ago as it was often a case where (and I am in no way casting dispersions on the original poster) if an item was not economical or impossible to repair the customer would do their nut! (Hi Fran :-))
