^^ glad you have been getting in some quality listening, Sean, and yes I am also a fan of Schubert's early Symphs... esp No.3.

I was recently listening to some of Mozart's early Masses... the first ones written when he was 12/ 13 which is frankly incredible. I guess there was no telly, play stations and iphone around in those days to distract the young creative mind!!

Now, I may be about a month behind our Fergus in this regard, but this afternoon, I have opened this new box-set:

I do very much enjoy Peter Schreier's voice and these are certainly interesting works...

This is a fantastic reading, beautifully recorded.

I'd score it higher than the Scholl version, and on a par with the King on hyperion.
Brass Bands are all very well in their place -
outdoors and several miles away....

I have been listening to some of Fauré's chamber music lately myself. I like that particular soundscape but I have not heard the cello sonatas in a while....will dig them out again soon.

Palestrina is undoubtedly one of my particular favourite Early Music composers for simple, pure and beautiful melodic lines and harmonies.

I find them quite overtly emotional, I know very little of them but I wouldn't be surprised to find them all to have been composed in and around the Great War. They convey that sense of desolation.
