Is it time to replace my valves?

Post by Diapason »

Well, not MY valves, my amps' valves.

In recent weeks and months, I've noticed a certain oddness to sibilant sounds, almost like when you think a radio is tuned in properly and then the "s" sounds make you realise it's not right on the station. Okay, it's milder than that, and until this evening has been in the "am I imagining this?" folder, but I'm now sure the effect is real. A quick gander at the valves revealed this:

and, interestingly, the same thing could be seen on the same valve on both monos, although much less so on the left.

So, is this a busted valve? I replaced the power valves when I bought the monos, but never replaced the smaller, input valves, and for all I know they're originals and have many tens of thousands of miles on them. The valve pictured is an EF184, which I know absolutely nothing about. I'd need 4 of them per amp, and if I was replacing them I'd probably replace the two 6922s per side as well. I'm reluctant to get into tube madness, so I'd just be looking for something good, robust, and not breathed on by ancient dragons of Atlantis.

Any thoughts?

That looks like a leaky valve - ie one where oxygen is getting in. Its a bit hard to tell from your photo, but does that spot look milky white or is it shiny mirror like?

You'd want to watch that - if there's a minute crack etc and it gets worse, the valve will burn out almost instantly.

Milk white on one, more mirrored on the other. Burning out instantly would be bad!

The mirror is OK and the way it should be - but milky white is not good and I wouldn't be happy leaving one of those in the amp - at all.

Yo know the story here - when they make the valves, they evacuate all the air they can, but there is still some left. So they put a little catalyst in the "getter", then flash it off with some current. That deposits it typically on the glass and results in the shiny mirror look. Sometimes its at the top, sometimes the side, and sometimes none. 6SN7s often don't have it for example. As a little air starts to seep in over the years, the getter can absorb some of it, but when it goes milky white yer bollixed I'm afraid.

What valve is it? 6922 or one of the 12A?7 series? You might pick one up in x-music or other guitar shop?

I wouldn't run the amp with that valve in there.

It's an EF184. Time for eBay perusal I think!

Thought I'd replied.... that valve is common enough on guitar amps so you might get it in X Music. Thy're not an expensive valve - unfortunately I have none of them for you to try. I can vouch Jim McShane too, good guy. Beware excise on US purchases though.

Hi all, just checked the various sites listed, and the old EF184 would seem to be in short supply. I've found some on eBay, so that might just do.
